Reclaimed or Recycled Wood: What’s the Difference (and Why It Matters)

Madeira resgatada ou reciclada: qual é a diferença (e por que isso importa)

When someone discovers PraSer pieces, one of the first questions is: "is this wood recycled?" The short answer is no. The true answer is better than that.

What is recycled wood

Recycled wood is wood that has undergone an industrial process of reuse, disassembly, treatment, and standardization. Pallets, construction structures, discarded furniture. The material is reused, which is already positive. But the process erases the wood's history. It becomes raw material again, without identity.

What is rescued wood

Rescued wood is different. It's wood that was saved from a demolition, from a tree that fell due to natural causes, or from scraps that other artisans give me at the end of their productions. It arrives at the studio with its history intact: the marks of time, the knots, the imperfections that tell decades of growth.

At PraSer Objetos, every little piece has a known origin. I know where it came from, what it was before, how long it took to grow. This context is not a detail; it is part of the piece.

Why I chose "rescued"

The word matters because it changes the relationship with the material. Recycling is processing. Rescuing is preserving.

When I work with rescued wood, the goal is not to erase what it was; it is to reveal what it always was. My pieces are born precisely from this listening: what does this wood want to be?

No two products are alike because no two woods are alike. The form follows nature, not the other way around.

What this means for those who take a piece

When you receive a PraSer object, you also receive the history of the wood. It is in the surface marks, in the shape that could not be otherwise, in the weight that belongs only to that piece of tree. The wood was not wasted. It was honored.

This is what differentiates a decorative object from an object with meaning.
